Kuang Si Waterfalls and Thousand Buddha caves is a route carefully developed to optimise the travel experience in a 5 day including the important visits in Luang Prabang and Vientiane.

Visit Vientiane, the capital that mixes French-colonial architecture with Buddhist temples such as the national symbol Pha That Luang.

Explore Luang Prabang, “City of the Golden Buddha”, the legendary capital of  Lan Xang Kingdom, located on the peninsula at the confluence of Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. 

Discover the beauty of Kuang Si waterfalls and cruise on Mekong river to Pak Ou caves, “Thousands Buddha cave”, for centuries an important place of worship and pilgrimage.

The itinerary is developed from Vientiane capital to Luang Prabang. However can be further customised to suit your travel and budget needs, and can be combined with other routes.

ITINERARY

01. ARRIVE IN VIENTIANE

Arrive in Vientiane and transfer to the Hotel.

In the afternoon walk in town for a first approach with the local lifestyle.

02. VIENTIANE - LUANG PRABANG

After breakfast we visit the major attractions in the capital such as Wat Si Saket, known for thousands of Buddha images that is said preserved the temple during the invasion by Siamese armies in 1828. Continue to Wat Ho Prakeo, which once housed the Emerald Buddha, to That Luang Stupa, considered the most important monument in Laos, which according to local belief houses a relic of Buddha transported to the site in the 3rd century BC, and to Patuxai, or “Laotian Arc de Triomphe”, the monument of the fallen of all wars. Afterwards visit to  the Morning Market.

In the afternoon, visit to the National Museum of Vientiane, formerly the Museum of the Revolution, dedicated to the revolution of 1970 for the liberation from imperialist occupation.

Transfer to the airport in time for the domestic flight to Luang Prabang, the ancient royal capital of Lan Xang Kingdom located on a peninsula at the confluence of Mekong River and Nam Khan rivers. 

Upon arrival we climb Mount Phousi to visit the sacred gilded stupa and to enjoy the beautiful panorama and a romantic sunset over the Mekong. In the evening worth a stroll through the Night Market where they found the handicrafts of ethnic minorities in the area.

03. LUANG PRABANG - PAK OU CAVES

In the morning we continue the visits to Wat Visoun, built in 1513, Wat Aham, “Monastery of the Heart in Bloom“, built at the beginning of the 19th century, and formerly a place of meditation and encounter between the animist and Buddhist culture; and to Wat Mai, the “New Monastery” built in the late 18th century, among the most complex and extended picturesque in town, richly decorated and easily distinguishable for the singular roofs to 5 levels.

Later transfer to the pier and board for a short cruise on the river to Pak Ou Caves, or “Thousand Buddhas caves“, situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Ou river, one of the most significant visits during your journey in Laos. 

The sanctuary consists of 2 large cavities in the limestone: Tham Ting, the lower cave, and Tham Theung, the higher cave. For over thousands years has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for the faithful who came to pray bringing the gift of an image of Buddha. Following this tradition today both cavities housing thousands of Buddha statues of different sizes, from a few centimeters to about 2 meters, in different styles and spiritual positions (mudra), from meditation to nirvana. 

While sailing we admire the typical Laotian rural natural landscape and the local way of life. Stop in some local villages including Ban Xang Hai known for the production of Lao Lao, the famous “whiskey” rice,Ban Xiengmene and BanChan, specialized in ancient textile tradition and mulberry paper production.

Visit to the Buddhist temple Wat Long Khoun, “Monastery of happiness“, built in the 18th century, once used as a sanctuary by those in search of spiritual rejuvenation, including the new kings that before the coronation ceremony use to spend three days here meditating.

04. LUANG PRABANG - KUANG SI

Very early in the morning is worth a visit to the Buddhist daily ritual on the central street of the city where devotees offer food donations to a long line of monks who reciprocate with blessings and prayers. An ancient religious tradition that manifests itself so remarkable only in Luang Prabang.

After breakfast we visit the characteristic Phousi Market where we can find unique merchandise such as dried buffalo skins, tea, food and local crafts. Laos is known for the numerous ethnic groups and on this day we have the opportunity to meet some of them by visiting at the villages Ban Ouay (Hmong), Ban Ou (Laoloum), Ban Thaoene (Khmu).

We continue to the outskirts of Luang Prabang to visit the amazing Kuang Si waterfall. On the way we visit some villages inhabited by ethnic minoritiesOnce at Kuang Si waterfalls we can enjoy a swim in the refreshing turquoise waters, explore the trails that penetrate the forest or just relax framed in a beautiful natural setting.

Afterwards we visit Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts & Shop, a social enterprise mainly oriented local textile crafts that supports the preservation of local cultural and craft traditions. The structure is set in a beautiful tropical garden on the Mekong riverside. We end the day with a beautiful sunset from Wat Phabath temple

05. LUANG PRABANG - DEPARTURE

In the morning we visit the National Museum, former Royal Palace, now home to an important collection of precious including Buddha statues and many gifts received from dignitaries visiting the court of Luang Prabang, especially the golden statue of Buddha Phra Bang from which the city takes its name.

Transfer to international airport in time for your departure flight.
