The itinerary Luang Prabang and ethnic minorities combines visits to Luang Prabang and experience in the nature at the village inhabited by the Khmu tribe.

Visit Luang Prabang, “City of the Golden Buddha”, the legendary capital of  Lan Xang Kingdom, located on the peninsula at the confluence of Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.

Discover the beauty of Kuang Si waterfalls and cruise on Mekong river to Pak Ou caves, “Thousands Buddha cave”, for centuries an important place of worship and pilgrimage.

Hike to the Khmu ethnic minority village to learn about the culture and the environment. Funded by Lao Spirit Resort, a project launched in 2003 involving local people in tourism and contributing to the local economy project, allows visitors to have a close experience with the ethnic group.

Visit the “Elephant Park Project” the conservation project developed along the banks of Nam Khan River.

ITINERARY

01. ARRIVE IN LUANG PRABANG - CITY TOUR

Arrive in Luang Prabang, located on a peninsula at the confluence of Mekong and Nam Khan River, UNESCO World Heritage since 1995 . The origins date back to the ancient city Muang Sua built in 698 AD. 

We visit Wat Visoun, built in 1513; Wat Aham, “Monastery of the Heart in Bloom”, built at the beginning of the 19th century and formerly a place of meditation and encounter between the animist and Buddhist culture; Wat Mai, the “New Monastery”, built in the late 18th century, among the most complex and extended picturesque in town, richly decorated and easily distinguishable for the singular roofs to 5 levels.

In the late afternoon we climb Mount Phousi to visit the sacred gilded stupa and to enjoy the beautiful panorama and a romantic sunset over the Mekong. In the evening worth a stroll through the Night Market where we can find the handicrafts of ethnic minorities in the area.

02. LUANG PRABANG - PAK OU CAVES

After breakfast we visit Wat Sene Souk Haram, the “Temple of the 100,000 treasures”, built in 1718 using 100,000 stones extracted from the Mekong River, and Wat Xieng Thong, “Monastery of the Golden City”, founded in 1560, among the most important of Luang Prabang, known for the elegance and grace of the period architecture.

Afterwards we transfer to the pier and board for a river cruise to Pak Ou Caves, or “Thousand Buddhas cave”, situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Ou river, one of the most significant visits during your journey in Laos. The sanctuary consists of 2 large cavities in the limestone: Tham Ting, the lower cave (30 steps), and Tham Theung, the higher cave (70 steps). For over thousands of years has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for the faithful who came to pray bringing the gift of an image of Buddha. Following this tradition today both cavities housing thousands of Buddha statues of different sizes, from a few centimeters to about 2 meters, in different styles and spiritual positions (mudra), from meditation to nirvana.

While browsing admire the typical Laotian rural natural landscape and the local lifestyle. Stop in some local villages including Ban Xang Hai, famous for the production of Lao Lao, the famous rice “whiskey”.

We conclude the day with a visit to the Buddhist temple Wat Long Khoun, “Monastery of happiness“, made in the 18th century, once used as a sanctuary by those in search of spiritual rejuvenation, including the new kings that before the coronation ceremony use to spend three days here meditating.

03. LUANG PRABANG - KUANG SI WATERFALLS

Very early in the morning is worth a visit to the Buddhist daily ritual on the central street of the city where devotees offer food donations to a long line of monks who reciprocate with blessings and prayers. An ancient religious tradition that manifests itself so remarkable only in Luang Prabang.

In the morning we visit Phousi Market and local villages to learn about the laotian daily life. We then proceed to the outskirts of Luang Prabang to visit the amazing Kuang Si waterfall. On the way we visit some villages inhabited by ethnic minoritiesOnce at Kuang Si waterfalls we can enjoy a swim in the refreshing turquoise waters, explore the trails that penetrate the forest or just relax framed in a beautiful natural setting.

On the way back to town we visit Ban Xang Kong villageknow for the ancient textile tradition and mulberry paper production, and Ban Xieng Lek specialized in ancient textile tradition and mulberry paper production. We end the day with a beautiful sunset from the top of Wat Phabath temple.

04. LAO SPIRIT ADVENTURE

In the morning we hike (about 3h – easy) to Lao Spirit Resort in a Khmu tribal village, a project launched in 2003 involving local people in tourism and contributing to the local economy project, that allows visitors to have a close experience with the ethnic group.

Visit to the “Elephant Park Project” developed along the banks of the Nam Khan River and then take a short trek to the local villages.

Lunch at the local village Ban Houay Fai.

In the afternoon we visit Tad Sae waterfalls and hope on a local boat to return to the village.

05. LUANG PRABANG - DEPARTURE

In the morning we continue the National Museum, former Royal Palace, now home to an important collection of precious including Buddha statues and many gifts received from dignitaries visiting the court of Luang Prabang. 

Afterward we visit the local Central Market.

At the end transfer to the airport in time for your departure flight.
