Laos is probably the least popular destination in Southeast Asia for mass tourism. Following a long period of isolation after the hardships of the 1970s, Laos now offers visitors the wonders of a country waiting to be discovered.

Some of the major cities are certainly already part of classic itineraries such as the unmissable Luang Prabang, former capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom – the Land of a Million Elephants -, located on the peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, among the best-preserved ancient cities in Southeast Asia, with a rich and distinct artistic heritage and French colonial buildings.

Vang Vieng, the small town framed by a picturesque backdrop of karst mountains, lush forests, animist tribal villages and impressive caves; Vientiane, the political capital, with significant monuments including the That Luang Stupa, considered the most important in the country.

Laos offers a vast cultural and natural heritage compared to more traditional destinations. The country is home to more than 150 ethnic groups with as many as 82 different languages and dialects, many of whom live in remote areas, far from the comforts of the main tourist destinations.
